2010 Community Benefit Summit

Community Benefit Summit Embraces the Challenges and Opportunities of Health Reform

More than 300 Kaiser Permanente employees and physicians from across the country, most of whom spend a major part of their work lives supporting initiatives for low-income populations, came together Oct. 21-22 in San Francisco for the Kaiser Permanente Community Benefit Summit to reaffirm their mission to make a measurable impact on the health of the communities we serve, with the end goal of eliminating health disparities.

Kaiser Permanente’s senior leadership, who participated throughout the event, urged the gathering to demonstrate what Ray Baxter, senior vice president for Community Benefit, Research and Public Policy, termed transformational leadership by embracing the challenges and opportunities of health care reform to promote a culture of prevention and universal coverage and to be a loud and credible voice for equity.

This is the moment we’ve been waiting 60 years for, declared Sharon Levine, MD, associate executive director of The Permanente Medical Group, referring to Kaiser Permanente’s long crusade to bring about universal access to quality health care.  During those six decades, Kaiser Permanente’s Community Benefit efforts to meet the needs of underserved populations through charity care, subsidized coverage, partnerships with the healthcare safetynet and community-based prevention programs have left the organization better positioned than any health care organization in the nation to succeed in the reformed marketplace and to serve as a national model for shaping the future of health care.

We invite you to share in the inspiring words and deeds presented in the course of the Summit through the videos and other materials assembled here.
