Ten years ago, as we considered how to make a stronger impact on community health outside the walls of Kaiser Permanente clinics and facilities, we could not have imagined how Kaiser Permanente’s Community Health Initiatives (CHI) would flourish and gain traction at so many levels.
This timeline presents the milestones of our work throughout our first decade:
The timeline of our first decade points the way to our aspirations for our next decade and the years to come: taking what we’ve learned so far, scaling these insights and contributions in more ways and more places, and continuing to demonstrate the powerful ripple effect that a health care organization like ours can have on the total health of the communities we serve.
A decade ago, few were talking about comprehensive, place-based, cross-sectoral community health work; even fewer were actually implementing these approaches. Today, it’s the standard — an approach embraced by both practitioners and funders. More importantly, this approach is enshrined in public policy and in the national prevention strategy.
Kaiser Permanente’s Community Health Initiatives paved the way. We’re proud of our contributions and eager to work with our partners to do even more in the years to come.
If we are to live up to our promise as a total health organization with the healthiest possible members in the healthiest possible communities, we need to continue to act on the social determinants of health that lay outside of the doctor’s office. That’s the vision of Community Health Initiatives, now and into the future.
