HONOLULU — Kaiser Permanente’s Moanalua Medical Center has received the 2017 Women’s Choice Award as one of America’s Best Hospitals™ for Obstetrics and America’s Best Hospitals™ for Bariatric Surgery. Presented by WomenCertified Inc., this evidence-based designation measures female patient satisfaction and clinical excellence to identify top health care institutions throughout the nation.

America’s Best Hospitals is the only national list that focuses on female patient satisfaction, patient recommendation ratings and what women say they want from a hospital. The scoring is based on data provided by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems surveys, as well as accreditation information from national sources. The obstetrics designation is given to hospitals that have an on-site neonatal intensive care unit, high patient safety scores, low rates of early elective deliveries and that rank above the national average for patient recommendation.

“Women make 90 percent of the health care decisions for themselves and their families, so it’s an honor to be named a top hospital for obstetrics for the third straight year,” said Mary Ann Barnes, RN, president of Kaiser Foundation Health Plan and Hospitals Hawaii Region. “It’s a testament to the high quality of prenatal and maternity care we provide to women in Hawaii, from our Family Birth Center to our designation as Hawaii’s first Baby-Friendly Hospital advocating breastfeeding to new moms.”

The bariatric surgery designation is given to hospitals that meet the high standards put into place by the American College of Surgeons and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery through the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program. Additionally, the designation requires hospitals to receive patient recommendation ratings above the national average on the HCAHPS survey.

“Our bariatric surgery program recently received re-certification as a nationally accredited program through MBSAQIP, indicating the highest standards for patient safety and effective treatment of severe obesity,” added Barnes. “To be recognized by Women’s Choice for the second straight year speaks to the expertise and patient-centered focus of our bariatric surgeons and staff.”
