Virginia Premier has announced a collaboration with Kaiser Permanente to create a fully integrated health care experience for Virginia residents receiving care through Medicaid.

Under this collaboration, Kaiser Permanente’s high-quality, affordable health care services will continue to be available to its current Medicaid members in Virginia through Virginia Premier, the second largest Medicaid managed care organization in Virginia.

Beginning Oct. 1, 2018, Virginia Premier and Kaiser Permanente will provide health care to Kaiser Permanente’s 15,000 members in Virginia assigned to Medallion 4.0 by the Department of Medical Assistance Services. These Kaiser Permanente members will become Virginia Premier members with Kaiser Permanente as their primary care provider. They will have access to convenient physician care, online appointments and care and medical centers designed with their needs in mind.

“We’re always open to innovative, strategic partnerships that enable us to increase access to affordable, quality health care for Virginians, and this is an excellent opportunity to do that,” said Linda Hines, CEO of Virginia Premier. “By working with Kaiser Permanente, we’ll be able to serve more members, and Medicaid recipients will have more choices. It allows us to make the most of our position as one of six plans contracted by DMAS to fulfill the Medallion 4.0 contract.”

In announcing their formal collaboration, Virginia Premier and Kaiser Permanente underscore their shared values in quality, innovation, education, affordability and service. Building on each other’s strengths, Virginia Premier and Kaiser Permanente will combine their renowned capabilities and medical care to improve the health of the communities they serve.

“Through this collaboration with Virginia Premier, our members will still have access to the award-winning Kaiser Permanente doctors they know and trust,” said Kim Horn, president of Kaiser Permanente of the Mid-Atlantic States. “New members to this innovative program will also have access to Kaiser Permanente’s convenience and quality care by our physicians in Virginia.”

Members will receive a new ID card. Kaiser Permanente members affected by this collaboration will be transferred to the new plan and their primary care physician will remain the same.

The collaboration will be effective in four counties and five cities: Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince William and the cities of Alexandria, Fairfax, Falls Church, Manassas and Manassas Park. (Note that these areas are not entirely co-extensive with the area DMAS defines as “Northern Virginia.”) The effective date coincides with the regional rollout for Medallion 4.0 in Northern Virginia.

The 2019 Medicaid expansion in Virginia will also figure into the collaboration. Of the roughly 25,000 current Kaiser Permanente members in the area, those who become eligible for Medicaid on Jan. 1 will be able to become Virginia Premier members and receive care from Kaiser Permanente.

With nearly 1,500 primary and specialty care physicians available to them, members of this plan will have access to one of the largest medical groups in Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia.
