HONOLULU — The National Committee for Quality Assurance, a leading independent health care quality organization, ranked Kaiser Permanente Hawaii first in the nation in six measures of health care in its 2016 NCQA Quality Compass® report. Quality Compass assesses the performance of 400 commercial health plans throughout the nation in 48 clinical and service measures, including prevention and screening, chronic conditions and behavioral health care.

Kaiser Permanente Hawaii leads the nation in:

  • Counseling for nutrition for children and adolescents
  • Counseling for physical activity for children and adolescents
  • Pharmacotherapy management of COPD
  • Use of imaging studies for low back pain
  • Follow-up care for children prescribed ADHD medication
  • Metabolic monitoring for children and adolescents on antipsychotics

Locally, Kaiser Permanente ranked No. 1 among health plans in Hawaii in 34 of 48 measures of care, including BMI weight assessment for children and adults, childhood immunizations, breast and cervical cancer screening, controlling high blood pressure, comprehensive diabetes care, smoking cessation and prenatal care.

“Our members trust us to provide quality health care that helps them manage their health, prevent illness and treat chronic diseases,” said Mary Ann Barnes, RN, president of Kaiser Foundation Health Plan and Hospitals Hawaii Region. “We’re honored to receive recognition as a leading health care provider in Hawaii and in the nation, which speaks to the expertise and dedication of our physicians and staff.”

The Quality Compass rankings follow recent reports that awarded high marks to Kaiser Permanente Hawaii for delivering quality care and making patient safety a priority. Last month, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Score recognized Kaiser Permanente Moanalua Medical Center with an A grade for patient safety. Earlier in the year, NCQA rated Kaiser Permanente’s Medicare and Medicaid plans the highest in the state in its annual Health Insurance Plan Ratings report.

The annual NCQA Quality Compass rankings are based on combined scores of Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS®) and the Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (CAHPS®). Complete results are available at www.ncqa.org.
