Jay Bachicha, MD, a Kaiser Permanente physician in Union City, California, was awarded the LGBTQ+ Leadership Award by the California chapter of the National Diversity Council for his longtime advocacy for the LGBTQ community.
The award, presented June 20 at the inaugural LGBTQ+ Allies Diversity Summit, recognizes Dr. Bachicha’s work in the community, as a physician, and in his role as national co-chair of KP Pride, Kaiser Permanente’s Business Resource Group that represents LGBTQ Kaiser Permanente physicians and staff.
Dr. Bachicha says his work with KP Pride is important because “despite recent victories, there are lots of barriers for many folks to be accepted at work and at home as their authentic and true selves.”
Outside of his Kaiser Permanente work, Dr. Bachicha has served as a board member for the National Board of Medical Examiners, the organization that writes the examinations that all physicians in the United States and Canada must pass to become licensed.
He was instrumental in creating NMBE’s Diversity and Inclusion Task Force, which is responsible for ensuring diversity and inclusion practices and processes are incorporated in the NBME workplace, in the recruitment of volunteer test writers, and when writing examination questions.
As an OB-GYN, Dr. Bachicha has also shared his medical skills and knowledge on medical missions to Ghana, Ethiopia, Nicaragua, the Philippines, Haiti and Panama.
Dr. Bachicha and others spoke recently about the LGBTQ+ Leadership Award, his work with KP Pride, and his insights on equity and inclusion for the LGBTQ community.
