HARBOR CITY, Calif., — When patients enter Kaiser Permanente’s new Manhattan Beach Medical Offices, they can expect an experience that looks and feels completely different from any other health care provider. “With this new location, we’re pivoting into the future of health care,” said Lesley Wille, RN, senior vice president and area manager of Kaiser Permanente South Bay Medical Center. “We’ve challenged ourselves to make going to the doctor more convenient. We’re working to integrate technology and wellness programming to make our patients healthier and happier.”
The 9,000 square foot Manhattan Beach Medical Offices include the most commonly sought-after services, such as pharmacy, x-ray, a nurse clinic, limited laboratory services, adult primary care, pediatrics, and obstetrics-gynecology. Patients who had been travelling to Torrance or Harbor City to see their personal physicians will now be able to access care without the commute. Popular specialty services, such as podiatry, dermatology, and allergy, are expected to be added in late 2016.
A shorter drive isn’t the only way that Kaiser Permanente is hoping to save time for its patients. Thanks to telephone and video appointments, patients can connect with their doctors from the comfort of their smartphones or tablets. “Video appointments are appropriate for many primary care needs that don’t require a physical exam, such as colds, coughs and allergies,” said Barbara Carnes, MD, area medical director for Kaiser Permanente South Bay. “Plus, our patients love that they can securely talk with their physician without leaving their home or work.”
In addition to video appointments, patients will have the option of express check-in, which allows them to confirm their appointment, pay their co-pay, and update their personal information online prior to coming into the medical office. Once they’ve arrived, patients will find décor and design elements that more closely resemble a spa than a traditional doctor’s office, complete with redesigned nurse stations and exam rooms that emphasize patient comfort. Equipped with tablets that monitor everything from patient wait times to physician schedules, staff will be free to move about the office to greet patients, facilitate their visit, and introduce educational resources.
“Kaiser Permanente has always been a strong believer in prevention. This shouldn’t only be a place that you come to when you’re sick—we want to help you stay well, whether that’s with your annual flu shot or tools to reduce stress,” said Carnes. “We designed this space to feel warm and welcoming, so that it can serve as a local resource for healthy living.”
Kaiser Permanente Manhattan Beach Medical Offices are located on the first floor of 400 S. Sepulveda Boulevard. Limited appointments will be available beginning December 16, with the office opening full time on January 6, 2016.
