HONOLULU — Kaiser Permanente’s Moanalua Medical Center has received the Get With The Guidelines®– Heart Failure Gold Plus and Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award for 2016 from the American Heart Association (AHA)/American Stroke Association (ASA). Moanalua Medical Center has been honored with a dual Gold Plus distinction, the highest level of recognition, for meeting AHA/ASA’s quality measures for treatment of heart failure for the fifth consecutive year, and stroke care for the fourth consecutive year.
The quality measures are designed to help hospital teams provide the most up-to-date, evidence-based care to produce positive patient outcomes. They focus on appropriate use of medications such as clot-busting and anti-clotting drugs, blood thinners and cholesterol-reducing drugs, and preventive action for deep vein thrombosis and smoking cessation counseling. For heart failure patients, measures include, proper use of medications and aggressive risk-reduction therapies, such as ACE inhibitors/ARBs, beta-blockers, diuretics, anticoagulants, and other appropriate therapies to reduce hospital readmissions.
“Our physicians and care providers at Moanalua Medical Center are committed to providing the highest level of care and improving patient outcomes through innovative treatments and evidence-based guidelines. Their work makes a difference in the lives of our patients and their families every day,” said Linda Puu, RN, MSN, hospital administrator at Kaiser Permanente Moanalua Medical Center. “It’s an honor to receive the highest level of recognition from the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association, which demand the most rigorous standards of care in treating cardiovascular and stroke patients.”
Hospitals receiving a Get With The Guidelines Stroke Gold Plus Achievement Award have demonstrated 85 percent or higher compliance to best-practice standards of care for 12 consecutive months. In addition, hospitals that have received the award have demonstrated 75 percent compliance with 7 out of 10 stroke quality measures during the 12-month period. Hospitals receiving a Get With The Guidelines Heart Failure Gold award have demonstrated at least 85 percent compliance in all achievement measures outlined by AHA for at least 24 months. To qualify for the Gold Plus designation, hospitals must demonstrate at least 75 percent compliance to rigorous best practice standards of care in at least four of nine additional heart failure quality measures for 12 consecutive months.
The AHA/ASA’s Get With The Guidelines Program puts the unparalleled expertise of the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association to work for hospitals nationwide, helping hospital care teams ensure that the care provided to heart failure and stroke patients is consistent with the latest evidence-based guidelines. The goal of participating in Get With The Guidelines is to save lives. Most hospitals that implement Get With The Guidelines realize measurable results, including improved patient outcomes and fewer recurring events.
