HONOLULU — Starting today, Kaiser Permanente Moanalua Medical Center is offering patients the comfort and convenience of having family members and friends visit them in the hospital 24 hours a day, seven days a week throughout the year.
Kaiser Permanente Moanalua Medical Center is the only hospital in Hawaii to offer open visitation hours for patients. Children accompanied by an adult are also welcome.
“The open visitation hours are just one part of Kaiser Permanente’s new Family Presence policy, developed with leadership from the Patient & Family Centered Care Advisory Council,” said Peter Makowski, hospital administrator, Moanalua Medical Center. “The advisory council provides guidance, ideas and suggestions from the patient and family point of view, keeping them at the center of every decision we make and helping us continually improve care.”

The new visitation policy lets the patient determine when, who and how many visitors they want. Research shows giving family members and close friends greater access to patients throughout the day helps speed up the recovery and increases satisfaction with the overall treatment process. In addition, loved ones can provide important information to hospital staff when the patient is unable to communicate.
Launched in July 2012, the Patient & Family Centered Care Advisory Council collaborates with Kaiser Permanente staff and providers to improve quality and safety of care and better meet the needs of the patient. Eleven patient advisers volunteer their time to add the patient perspective along all areas of the care continuum. The patient advisers worked with hospital staff to develop this new Family Presence policy so families can fully participate as equal partners on their loved ones’ care team.
