PASADENA, Calif. — For the fifth consecutive year, Kaiser Permanente’s Medicare plan in California once again has earned 5 stars, the highest overall rating for quality and service for 2016, from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.
“A 5-star rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services is a tremendous recognition of our success in helping our members maximize their total health,” said Edward Ellison, MD, executive medical director of the Southern California Permanente Medical Group. “Our caring, highly-trained physicians and staff partner with patients to achieve their best health outcomes.”
The Medicare Star Quality Ratings, developed by CMS, assigns scores of 1 to 5 stars to Medicare plans. The overall scores are based on care and service quality measures (Parts C and D) across nine categories, including staying healthy, managing chronic conditions, member satisfaction, customer service and pharmacy services. The number of measures used varies by the health plan, and from year to year, but for 2016, CMS based overall scores for each plan on up to 44 unique quality and performance measures. Besides care and service quality, the star ratings also reflect health plans’ compliance performance.
“This recognition speaks to our cutting-edge technology systems and truly makes Kaiser Permanente a model for integrated health care,” said Benjamin K. Chu, MD, MPH, MACP, regional president, Kaiser Permanente Southern California. “Our focus and commitment to quality allows us to consistently deliver safe and reliable care to our members.”
This announcement follows the recently released National Committee for Quality Assurance Medicare Health Insurance Plan Rankings 2014-2015. Kaiser Permanente Southern California and Northern California Medicare plans (with Parts C and D) were the highest-rated in their respective markets.
Kaiser Permanente Colorado, Kaiser Permanente Hawaii, Kaiser Permanente Northwest and Kaiser Permanente Mid-Atlantic States also received 5 stars according to the 2016 Medicare Star Quality Ratings.
In addition to high-quality care and service, another benefit of a 5-star plan is that Medicare beneficiaries may change their health plan to Kaiser Permanente through the 5 Star Special Enrollment Period from Dec. 8, 2015, to Nov. 30, 2016, without having to wait until the next annual enrollment period. All of Kaiser Permanente physicians accept Kaiser Permanente Medicare health plan members.
