HONOLULU — Kaiser Permanente Hawaii is supporting Hawaii Public Health Institute with a $80,000 community benefit grant to continue their mission of improving population health through policy, systems and environmental changes. HIPHI’s efforts to research, identify and advocate for public health priorities will improve the health and wellness of Hawaii residents by shaping policies and systems that affect them.

HIPHI has released its 2018 Public Health Forecast and Priority Legislation agenda identifying the state’s top public health concerns for the year. HIPHI’s public health agenda was developed in collaboration with partners and distributed to lawmakers and Gov. David Ige on opening day of the 2018 Hawaii state legislative session. The agenda identified tobacco prevention and control, healthy eating and active living, family health, population health, environmental health, economic justice, education and healthy workforce as areas of focus for lawmakers.

Among the top priorities are tobacco-related education and regulation, with a focus on electronic smoking devices and youth tobacco prevention. HIPHI’s activities surrounding tobacco prevention include a legislative informational briefing on electronic smoking devices; bills to tax and regulate these devices and introduce tobacco-free school buffer zones; and an educational video on the dangers of tobacco and vaping. Priority legislation for HIPHI also includes promoting healthy beverages in children’s restaurant meals and establishing positions in the Department of Education to implement a Farm to School program.

“After listening to our stakeholders, conducting extensive research and analyzing policies from different states, we are excited to introduce our first public health legislative agenda and collaborate with lawmakers this session,” said Jessica Yamauchi, executive director of Hawaii Public Health Institute. “With so many issues to tackle, we’re grateful for the support of Kaiser Permanente and our partners as we work together to shape policies that will have a positive impact on our community.”

“HIPHI brings together community organizations, government officials, business leaders and researchers in support of a common goal: to improve overall health and wellness in Hawaii,” said Frank Richardson, vice president and regional counsel, Kaiser Permanente Hawaii. “Its mission aligns with our efforts to address the most critical health issues facing our community today.”
