ATLANTA – The Kaiser Permanente Georgia Cancer Center has been recognized with a three-year certification for outpatient hematology-oncology practices that meet nationally-recognized standards for quality cancer care. The certification was awarded by the Quality Oncology Practice Initiative (QOPI®) Certification Program, an affiliate of the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

“Receiving this certification is a result of Kaiser Permanente’s commitment to excellence in care delivery,” said James Hamrick, MD, chief of medical oncology and hematology for Kaiser Permanente Georgia. “Our cancer specialists work as a team, with the patient playing an integral role in developing their treatment plan. That coordinated approach to care leads to better outcomes and a more satisfying experience for our patients.”

In applying for certification, the Kaiser Permanente Georgia Cancer Center voluntarily participated in a comprehensive site assessment. The Cancer Center was successful in meeting the standards and objectives of the QOPI Certification Program (QCP™), which focus on the following areas:

  • treatment planning
  • staff training and education
  • chemotherapy orders and drug preparation
  • patient consent and education
  • safe chemotherapy administration
  • monitoring and assessment of patient well-being

This certification for outpatient oncology practices is the first program of its kind in the United States. QOPI® analyzes individual practice data, comparing the information to more than 160 evidence-based and consensus quality measures. To receive the QCP seal, practices must score above the threshold on the key QOPI quality measures and meet chemotherapy safety standards established by ASCO and the Oncology Nursing Society. Practices are also able to compare their performance to others across the country.

“QOPI provides oncology practices with the information needed to evaluate and continually improve the quality of care they provide for patients,” said ASCO President Peter Paul Yu, MD, FACP, FASCO. “Since its start in 2010, The QOPI Certification Program allows practices to maintain their commitment to excellence by providing high quality care for patients with cancer.”

More than 900 oncology practices have registered for the QOPI program nationwide and 250 have received the certification. The QCP is a project of ASCO’s Institute for Quality, an ASCO affiliate dedicated to innovative quality improvement programs. For more information, please visit:
