Kaiser Permanente Colorado Rated No. 1 in Nation for Prevention and Health Promotion

October 30, 2013

DENVER — Kaiser Permanente Colorado is rated number one in the nation for best performance in prevention and health promotion, according to a new survey of employers released by the nonprofit National Business Coalition on Health.

“At Kaiser Permanente, prevention is in our DNA,” said Eric Harker, MD, medical director for Prevention Services, Kaiser Permanente Colorado. “Eating right, exercising regularly, staying up to date on preventive screenings and staying away from harmful habits like smoking can have tremendous impacts on health. We are honored to receive this national recognition for our continued efforts to help our members be as healthy as they can be.”

The 2013 eValue8 TM survey is an annual health care accountability and quality improvement assessment used by employers and coalitions to manage the quality and efficiency of America’s health plans. The Colorado Business Group on Health  is one of several statewide coalitions to participate in the project.

“We use the information collected in the eValue8 survey to judge and track health plan’s outcomes and their approach to their Colorado customers,” said Bob Jamieson, president of Colorado Business Group on Health. “We are looking for plans that deliver a high-value product and that collaborate on projects important to our community. By identifying a best-in-class supplier, it helps all employers hold their plans accountable for continuous improvement towards that goal.”

Health plans are ranked by eValue8 based on results from a national survey of health plans. Kaiser Permanente Colorado received the top score in the nation in Prevention and Health promotion, which includes the following:

• Cancer Screenings
• Immunization Programs
• Tobacco Cessation
• Weight Management
• Obstetrics — Maternity and Child
• Health Promotion, Worksite Wellness and Health Assessments

Kaiser Permanente’s integrated approach to care delivery, innovative, web-based tools and robust system of electronic medical records enables better care coordination for physicians, improved clinical outcomes for patients and a higher quality of care for all. Just last month, Kaiser Permanente was recognized by the National Committee for Quality Assurance as the highest-rated commercial health insurance plan in Colorado and No. 13 in the nation. New for this year, Kaiser Permanente also received the “Best Value” recognition in Colorado for Diabetes Care factors for both Private plans (commercial) and Medicare. In addition, “NCQA’s Health Insurance Plan Rankings 2013-2014″ lists Kaiser Permanente as the top Medicare plan in Colorado and No. 4 in the nation. This is the fifth year in a row Kaiser Permanente Colorado has been among the top five Medicare plans in the U.S.*

About eValue8
An annual health care purchasing and quality improvement assessment process, eValue8 was created by business coalitions and employers like Marriott and General Motors to measure and evaluate health plan performance. eValue8 asks health plans questions about how they manage critical processes that control costs, reduce and eliminate waste, ensure patient safety, close gaps in care and improve health and health care. Plans provide detail on how they educate, engage and incent consumers to promote health and manage disease, as well as measure and pay providers. Plans and purchasers receive objective scores enabling comparison of plans against regional and national benchmarks and a roadmap for improvement. As a result of face-to-face discussion of findings and roadmap, plans learn what they need to do to align their strategies with purchaser expectations to maximize the value of the health care investment and ultimately, improve health and quality of care. NBCH believes that local business coalitions are key in facilitating multi-stakeholder collaborations at the community level to educate consumers, and improve quality and efficiency of the health delivery system. Purchasers interested in having their plans report performance in a variety of health services can contact NBCH or their local business coalition.
