PASADENA, Calif. — Kaiser Permanente and the Los Angeles Philharmonic are combining forces to increase the impact of their shared work to improve the health of communities throughout Southern California.

The multi-year collaboration involves Kaiser Permanente utilizing its community health experience and childhood development expertise to support LA Phil’s renowned music education program: Youth Orchestra Los Angeles, the signature program of LA Phil Music and Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel.

Through Kaiser Permanente’s Educational Theatre Program, the integrated health care system will share best practices with YOLA as the music education program continues to transform the lives of hundreds of students in underserved communities of Los Angeles with intensive after-school orchestral training, free instruments and academic support.

“At Kaiser Permanente, we’re driven by our mission, which compels us to advance total health — both in care settings and across our communities. We’re excited about our work with the LA Philharmonic, and it’s particularly meaningful because we share a vision of what it means to make a difference and build up our communities together,” said Julie Miller-Phipps, regional president, Kaiser Permanente Southern California, Health Plan and Hospitals.

“We are absolutely thrilled to be expanding our partnership with Kaiser Permanente during our Centennial season,” said Simon Woods, chief executive officer, LA Phil. “We are especially grateful for their support of our YOLA educators. Their expertise in community health and childhood development is a perfect complement to our own efforts to uplift children and families through music education. We look forward to promoting a shared vision of healthy communities filled with extraordinary music at this year’s Rose Parade.”

Over the past few years, Kaiser Permanente has been sharing the inspiring message of health at the LA Phil’s opening night at the Hollywood Bowl. Additionally, this year, Kaiser Permanente will offer free health screenings at the LA Phil’s Centennial Season anniversary street festival, Celebrate LA! A mobile health vehicle will be stationed in Koreatown as cyclists and pedestrians take to the streets during a special CicLAvia street festival on Sept. 30 honoring the LA Phil’s 100 years of bringing music to Los Angeles.

In addition, a symbol of this collaboration will be seen around the world on New Year’s Day 2019 during the 130th Rose Parade®. Kaiser Permanente’s Rose Parade float entry, “Music Moves Us — Inspiring a Healthier World,” embodies the Tournament of Roses® parade theme, Melody of Life — which celebrates music as a universal language.

Musicians from the LA Phil, YOLA and Kaiser Permanente will be riding on the float that draws inspiration from the Hollywood Bowl and Walt Disney Concert Hall — the iconic Los Angeles landmarks that are home to the LA Phil.

About the Los Angeles Philharmonic
The Los Angeles Philharmonic Association, under the vibrant leadership of Music & Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel, presents an inspiring array of music from all genres — orchestral, chamber and Baroque music, organ and celebrity recitals, new music, jazz, world music and pop — at two of L.A.’s iconic venues, Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Hollywood Bowl. The LA Phil’s season at Walt Disney Concert Hall extends from September through May, and throughout the summer at the Hollywood Bowl. With the preeminent Los Angeles Philharmonic at the foundation of its offerings, the LA Phil aims to enrich and transform lives through music, with a robust mix of artistic, education and community programs.

About YOLA
Through Gustavo Dudamel’s Youth Orchestra Los Angeles (YOLA) program – inspired by Venezuela’s revolutionary El Sistema — the LA Phil and its community partners provide free instruments, intensive music training, and academic support to over 1200 students from vulnerable communities, empowering them to become vital citizens, leaders, and agents of change. YOLA provides each student, from the ages of 6 to 18, with a strong musical and social foundation through participation in 12-15 hours of programming each week.

With YOLA sites in South L.A., the Rampart District, Westlake/MacArthur Park and East L.A., YOLA engages students from more than 200 schools in L.A. County. Music study is complemented by leadership development opportunities, parent workshops, and performances. YOLA’s young musicians have performed on great stages all over the world, including the LA Phil’s two iconic venues – the Hollywood Bowl and Walt Disney Concert Hall; in many other locations throughout Southern California; on national and international television broadcasts; and alongside the greatest artists.

On August 15, the Los Angeles Philharmonic unveiled the architectural design by Gehry Partners, LLC, for its new Judith and Thomas L. Beckmen YOLA Center @ Inglewood: the first permanent, purpose-built facility for Youth Orchestra Los Angeles (YOLA).
