“Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve.”

In the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s inspiring words, hundreds of Kaiser Permanente physicians and employees partnered with community organizations nationwide on Martin Luther King Day to help those in need in the communities we serve.

In Southern California, community building and improvement activities ranged from supporting school beautification projects, food and pet food drives, and homeless counts to determine where homeless persons can best be served, to assembling dental care kits that will be donated to families through the Watts Counseling and Learning Center .

At Charles W. Barrett Elementary School in Los Angeles, 50 staff from the Kaiser Permanente Educational Theatre program and the Watts Counseling and Learning Center, along with 40 school staff, students and community members, cleared out planters, planted native California plants, cleaned classrooms and painted murals and desks for the upper elementary library. The school will debut the results of everyone’s hard work at a special unveiling of the revamped space on March 9.

At Kaiser Permanente’s regional offices in Pasadena, staff collected and donated:

  • More than 2,600 pounds of food and over 500 pounds of pet food to Foothill Unity Center in Pasadena.
  • More than 40 “Welcome Home” baskets, over 60 hygiene kits and three large boxes of personal hygiene items to Union Station Homeless Services in Pasadena to assist individuals and families who are transitioning to a home and becoming self-sufficient.

These results and more demonstrate how getting involved is a valuable and fun way for people to make a difference in their communities. To learn more about other volunteering opportunities year-round, please visit https://community.kp.org/be-involved.
