PASADENA, Calif. —First Steps to Total Health,” Kaiser Permanente’s 2014 Rose Parade® float entry, was awarded the Lathrop K. Leishman Trophy for the most beautiful float entry from a non-commercial sponsor. The 125th Rose Parade marked Kaiser Permanente’s ninth float entry, designed and built once again by Raul Rodriguez and Fiesta Parade Floats.

Featuring Mr. Stork and a bundle of babies, “First Steps to Total Health” helps promote the actions we can all take to ensure our overall health so we can thrive at every stage of our life. Kaiser Permanente believes that babies who have a healthy first year will grow up to be healthy children, teens, adults and eventually become thriving seniors.

About 500 Kaiser Permanente employees and their families decorated the 55-foot long float over a five-day period. Hundreds of pounds of dry organic materials, including lentils, red beans, coconut flakes, flax seeds, peas, rice and seaweed helped bring the float to life. Red cabbage, Granny Smith apples and cumquats also decorate “First Steps to Total Health.” More than 25,000 stems of green jade, yellow gold strike, and hot pink topaz roses were accented by florescent orange, vibrant yellow, and dazzling hot pink gerberas, hypericum, cymbidium and Cattleya orchids, and floral designs of purple liatris and green bells of Ireland.

The Kaiser Permanente Rose Parade float entry has received an award every year, including: Theme Trophy for excellence in presenting the parade theme in 2013; the Lathrop K. Leishman Trophy in 2012; the Director’s Trophy for most artistic merit in design and floral presentation in 2011, 2008 and 2006; the Extraordinaire Trophy for the “most spectacular” float longer than 55 feet in 2010; the Tournament Special Trophy for exceptional merit in multiple classifications in 2009; and the President’s Trophy for most effective floral use and presentation in 2007.
